How to Hire Childcare: A Guide for Working Moms & Entrepreneurs
Feb 11, 2025If you’ve been thinking about hiring childcare but feel overwhelmed by the process, you’re not alone. The decision to bring a nanny or babysitter into your home is big—it requires trust, planning, and, for many of us, a mindset shift around receiving support. But here’s the truth: you deserve help, and your business (and sanity) will thank you for it.
In this guide, I’m breaking down everything I’ve learned from hiring childcare, from overcoming fears to finding and onboarding the perfect person to help care for your kids.
Why Hiring Childcare is a Game-Changer
When I first considered hiring a nanny, I had all the usual fears—cost, logistics, and the guilt of not doing everything myself. But after taking the leap, I realized:
- My work hours became more productive. Instead of squeezing in work during naps, I had dedicated time to focus.
- I became a more present mom. With structured work hours, I wasn’t distracted when spending time with my kids.
- My business grew. More focused work time meant I could scale my income and impact faster.
Step 1: Identifying Your Needs
Before you start looking for childcare, get clear on your specific needs:
- How many hours per week do you need coverage?
- What tasks do you want them to handle? (Childcare only, light housework, meal prep?)
- Do you prefer someone with professional experience or just a reliable, caring person?
- What’s your budget?
Having clear expectations will make the hiring process smoother and help you attract the right candidates.
Step 2: Finding the Right Childcare Provider
Where to Look:
- Care.com: Paid memberships allow you to message potential nannies directly.
- Local Facebook Groups: Neighborhood or parenting groups often have trusted recommendations.
- Word of Mouth: Ask friends or family if they know someone reliable.
- University Job Boards: College students studying early childhood education or nursing are great candidates.
Writing the Perfect Job Listing:
Be specific about hours, pay, duties, and expectations. Example:
"Seeking a part-time nanny for two kids (ages 3 & 5) in [Your City]. Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9 AM – 12 PM. Duties include childcare, light tidying, and occasional meal prep. Must have prior experience and references. $18-22/hr depending on experience. Message me for details!"
The more detailed your listing, the better responses you’ll get.
Step 3: Interviewing & Trial Periods
Once you’ve found promising candidates, schedule interviews. Some key questions to ask:
- What’s your experience with kids this age?
- How do you handle discipline and tantrums?
- Are you comfortable preparing meals and doing light housework?
- Do you have CPR/first aid training?
- What are your availability and long-term plans?
Trial Run:
Before committing, schedule a paid trial day. Observe how they interact with your kids and handle routines. If it feels right, move forward!
Step 4: Onboarding Your New Nanny
Set clear expectations from the start:
- Create a schedule with exact hours and responsibilities.
- Write a quick guide with emergency contacts, house rules, and routines.
- Communicate openly. Check in regularly to ensure it’s a good fit for both sides.
If you work from home, establish boundaries so they feel empowered to lead while you focus on work.
Step 5: Evaluating & Adjusting
Even with the best planning, adjustments may be needed. After a few weeks, check in:
- Are your kids comfortable and happy?
- Are they showing up on time and following expectations?
- Do you feel a sense of relief and productivity during work hours?
If everything aligns—congratulations! You’ve successfully hired childcare that supports your business and family life.
